At the 2019 January meeting of the SEIREA, Mr. Randy Budge, a Pocatello attorney specializing in estates and wills, told us of the importance of preparing a will so that your assets can be handed to your surviving family members as you wish to have belongings, property, finances, etc distributed. If you do not spell this out exactly as you want, then the state will become involved to help distribute whatever wealth and such you have at the time of your earthly departure. It was an interesting discussion and many of our members followed up with his suggestions.
During our February SEIREA meeting, ISU President Kevin Satterlee presented his vision of the future of ISU. He spoke of more inclusion among faculty and students, more access to the campus bringing back alumni to as many events as possible. He told us of a new Alumni Center that was close to having the necessary funds and he said the the "I" on Red Hill was about to be replaced with a more erosion friendly version. President Satterlee has created a very positive atmosphere at ISU since arriving in Pocatello. We are fortunate to have his leadership.

At our March SEIREA luncheon, Mr. Randy Dixon from Pocatello's "Relight the Night" committee gave a slide show and spoke about the many projects that this committee has done in Pocatello trying to restore the many historic neon lights. They started with the Chief Theater sign after they found it in poor condition stored at the airport. It cost a lot of money to get it restored, but the YESCO sign company completely restored it in their St. George, Utah facility. The committee then built a stand for it at the former location of the Chief Theater where it stands at the height it was on the theater. Randy said that led to the restoration of many other signs in Pocatello among which are the animated Greyhound Bus Depot sign, the historic Mollinelli's Jewelers sign, and the Teamsters sign. There are others in the works like the Fred's Photo Shop sign and the old Hudson Shoes Buster Brown sign. There are many shop owners that are also restoring their signs including Meyers Shoe Repair, the Office Bar and Grill, Bangs Stationers, and Maag Drug sign. One of the most recent crowning achievements was the restoration of the Yellowstone Hotel sign which is huge atop the former Yellowstone Hotel. Randy said they are planning on a self-guided neon sign "walk of fame" along UPRR Boulevard in Old Town Pocatello.
Chubbuck Mayor Kevin England was the guest speaker at the 2019 April luncheon meeting of the Southeast Idaho Retired Educators' Association. He spoke about how Chubbuck is growing and needing better facilities and services. He said there are plans to move the Chubbuck City Hall to a location near Chubbuck Road and Burley Drive and let the Chubbuck police department have the needed space of the old city hall on Yellowstone. He spoke of the potential of moving the Portneuf library over to a new location as well. He talked about the new interchange from I-15 which would provide more access to Chubbuck and to the new Northgate addition. All of these new improvements will bring new business and new opportunity to Pocatello and Chubbuck. During this April meeting, SEIREA had raised enough funds for three scholarships to ISU: $600 to the College of Education, $200 to ISU Success Center, and $600 in honor of Dean Kathryn Hildebrand who passed away unexpectedly in February. Rita Haggardt presented the checks to Catherine Rider from the ISU College of Education. Retired Educators have been fortunate in that the association has been able to present these bigger scholarship amounts two years in a row. We have a very generous group of retired educators. Thanks to everyone who helps make this possible!
At the May meeting of the Southeast Idaho Retired Educators Association, Rep. Elaine Smith gave a summary of the 2019 legislative session. We also remembered several colleagues who passed this year, and elected new officers for 2019-2020. President Roger Wheeler, VP Ronda Black, Secretary Mary Ann Hansen, Treasurer Judy Liday. SEIREA Christmas luncheon in December 2018
The group heard the Highland High School select choir and from Dean Katherine Hildebrand of the ISU College of Education. It was also the annual Christmas fundraising silent auction and raffle. Good food, great music, lots of fun prizes, and as always, wonderful friends.
