Meeting Minutes, February 6, 2019
The meeting was called to order at 12:05 by Vice President Roger Wheeler as President Stan Cope was enjoying warm weather in Florida. Roger welcomed everyone and briefly introduced our guest speaker, ISU President Keven Satterlee.
The prayer and pledge were offered by Miffy Lane whereafter the members enjoyed a luncheon of barbeque ribs and French fries.
Roger introduced the 13th president of ISU, Kevin Satterlee. Kevin became president of the university in June of 2018. He earned his undergraduate degree at Boise State University and his law degree from the University of Idaho. He and his wife Marilyn have 3 children. Kevin’s address centered on “What’s going on at ISU?”
To begin his tenure at ISU, Kevin listened to many constituents. One concern that came up was finances and budgets. As a result, Kevin hired a new Vice President of Financial Affairs, Glen Nelson. Kevin continues to hold listening tours. He has “Coffee with Kevin” in the Student Union Building. Anyone can come in and talk to him. In these conversations, he has learned of the passion that people have for ISU. It became obvious that the university had an issue with their travel system. Even though it wasn’t a huge issue, they made changes, and he feels it showed the staff that he listens to them. He heard that employees can’t afford to attend ISU events. So, he instituted a punch card system whereby employed can go to events for a reduced price.
Some items Kevin considers momentous. One is that in December the university approved a Faculty Constitution. This recognized a new paradigm in working with staff. A second item is the restoration of the “I” on Red Hill. This is to be built in the Spring and should be in place by Fall of 2019. Another item is the Alumni Center. There have been drawings done and they have 6 million of the 8.5 million needed to build the center.
Some “Project Charters” that Kevin is working on is to improve faculty morale/engagement/satisfaction. Another is student academic success. ISU has a retention problem and the staff will work on that. Equity and Inclusion is another project. He wants a safe and inclusive environment for all and is committed to free expression. There will be an indigenous people celebration in the fall also. And lastly, all renovations must be functional and branded with ISU.
There are many great things going on at ISU. One interesting item is that 5 students are competing in the “Three Minute Thesis Competition” in Boise. Students are allowed 3 minutes and 1 PowerPoint slide to showcase their work and communication skills. The ISU Debate team took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the State. There was no need for the finals as ISU swept the event! Thanks to Kevin for his interesting and informative speech.
Business Meeting
The financial report was given by Catherine Wilson
Miffy Lane moved and Mary Lu Aubrey seconded a motion to approve the minutes. The minutes were approved.
Miffy made an announcement about the United Senior Project. The AARP, the Bonneville Association, the Snake River Horizon Band, and NKA are looking into purchasing the old Bonneville Elementary School. They are asking for pledges.
February birthdays were acknowledged.
PERSI has announced that members will receive a 1% raise in March.
Roger went over some changes that have been recommended for the organization’s Standing Rules. The members will vote on these changes in the March meeting.
REA donated $61 to the Foodbank in January.
Chrys Robertson won the 50/50. She donated this back to the Foodbank. Thanks, Chrys.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:25PM.

Southeast Idaho Retired Educators Board Meeting
July 27, 2021 via Zoom
The meeting was called to order by President Roger Wheeler a 10:15 am. Those in attendance were Stan Cope, Judy Liday, Ronda Black, Pete Black, Francie Stephens, and Mary Ann Hansen. The first item on the agenda was the safety concerns caused by spikes in Covid. The Idaho Health Department was called and we were informed that just over 40% of Idahoans have been vaccinated. Covid cases have been rising steadily among those not vaccinated, and the Delta variant has been shown to be 2-3 more contagious than previous strains. It was decided the September meeting would proceed as scheduled at this time. Masks would be required, social distancing, and meals would be plated rather than served buffet style.
Roger gave out the proposed agenda for September. The program will include scholarship recipients from last year and the new Dean of Idaho State University College of Education, Jean Burelle-McGivney. We would like to thank Ruth Newell for her chairmanship of Birthdays these past years. Becky Hopkins will carry on in this capacity. Ron Wilson has resigned as 50\50 Raffle chair, Bev Gillette will continue in this job. Thank you to Ron also for all his hard work and dedication. New officers will also be installed and remarks made by State President Stan Cope. The October meeting will be set for Wednesday October 6, 2021.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:40 a.m.

Minutes May 1, 2019
The meeting was called to order at 12:03 by President Stan Cope. Stan welcomed everyone and introduced guests. Fred Olds was a special guest. Stan then gave a graduation speech to the group.
The prayer and pledge were offered by Susan Glenn where after the members enjoyed a luncheon.
Stan introduced the speaker, Representative Elaine Smith. Elaine is the Minority Caucus Chair of the Idaho Legislature. She is very involved in State and Community affairs and has served in the legislature for 18 years. She gave a report of the happenings this last year in the legislature. 727 bills were drafted, 489 were introduced and 329 became law. She said that this was the most “frustrating and mean-spirited” of all the sessions in which she has been. The legislators received 100’s and 100’s of phone calls and emails and there were many packed houses for testimony concerning the Medicaid expansion proposition which was passed by the voters. The same was true for the efforts to make it more restrictive to get initiatives on the ballot. And yet many legislators ignored this input from the patrons. Finally, Governor Little vetoed the bill to restrict initiatives and Medicaid expansion passed with 10 sideboards which were not included in the proposition passed by the electorate. In other issues, a change in the 1994 school funding formula did not get resolved. Representative Smith told the group that teacher salaries in Idaho are $10,000 lower than the national average and per pupil spending ranks Idaho last in the nation.
